Climpson & Sons opens new HQ and training academy

Climpson & Sons, the speciality coffee roaster, has opened a new HQ and purpose-built training academy in London’s Hackney.

The move, to a unit directly opposite the roastery, was prompted by the recent sale of the railway arches by Network Rail. 

The training facility is purpose-built to host a range of barista training and Specialty Coffee Association training courses.

“We have never really had a proper office, that hasn’t been thrown together in five mins or makeshift, so this was the perfect opportunity to do things properly. I really wanted to build something that not only looked good but was also functional,” said Climpson & Sons owner Ian Burgess.

 

Nestlé steps up efforts to address plastics waste and pollution

Nestlé has joined forces with other businesses and governments in signing The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment ('Global Commitment') at the Our Ocean Conference in Bali, Indonesia.

The Global Commitment is an initiative of The Ellen MacArthur Foundation and UN Environment. It aims to rethink the future of plastics by applying the principles of circular economy, in which plastics never become waste.

Nestlé ceo Mark Schneider said: "This Global Commitment is a step-change we urgently need in order to move from a linear to a circular economy. We want to act and lead by example. We will do our part to ensure that none of our packaging, including plastics, ends up in the natural environment."

Nestlé's goal is to make 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.

 

Change Please partners with Virgin Trains

Change Please, the social enterprise that helps to tackle homelessness, has partnered with Virgin Trains to offer a premium coffee range onboard.

It will see Virgin Trains expand its range in the onboard shop to include a Flat White, and introduce a new freshly brewed filter blend in First Class. In addition, customers who bring along a reusable cup will benefit from 20p discount on their coffee.

Change Please was launched in 2015 with the support of Virgin StartUp and puts 100% of its profits towards reducing homelessness. It employs people without a place to live, provides full barista training, pays the Living Wage and offers support with housing, bank accounts and mental wellbeing.

Change Please will use their profits generated from their contract with Virgin Trains to train more baristas. It is estimated around 107 homeless people will be trained each year, as a result of the partnership.

 

Hospitality sector employs 2.35m people in UK

The UK hospitality sector employs 2.35 million people, an increase of nearly half a million in five years. 

The analysis of Office of National Statistics data by hospitality recruitment platform, Adia, revealed that the UK hospitality sector achieved a total annual turnover of £102 billion (bn) (up from £98bn the year before).  

The figures come despite the number of businesses operating in the sector falling by around 8% in the last year, from 202,060 to 185,955, it said.

 

Costa Coffee uses VR to train baristas

Costa Coffee is using a new virtual reality training programme to upskill its baristas.

The VR footage currently includes tips on how to perfect an Americano as well as the Christmas drink – Black Forest Hot Chocolate. 

Over 1,500 Costa Coffee stores are being issued with Google Cardboard headsets and tools for teams to access the 360-degree footage.

Costa Coffee plans to add more videos including the journey from bean to cup with footage from sustainable coffee farmers in Peru.  Additional content will feature a tour of the Costa Coffee Roastery in Basildon, to allow new recruits to understand more about quality testing by Master of Coffee Gennaro Pelliccia and his team.

 

Specialty Coffee Association launches sustainability awards

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has revealed that nominations are now open for the 2019 SCA Sustainability Awards. 

There are three categories for this award - Individual, Project and Business Model - which will be presented in April 2019 at Re:co Symposium in Boston, USA.

The individual award will reward an individual leader who has significantly contributed to advancing sustainability in the coffee industry. This could be through raising awareness of key issues or developing a project or business model that generates positive social and environmental impacts. The Project sustainability award celebrates innovative projects to expand and promote sustainability within the coffee world while the Business Model category recognises the hard work of individuals, businesses and organisations who created and implemented the business model, the award aims to inspire others

The deadline to submit an application is December 14, 2018. 

 

Tim Hortons to open Belfast drive-thru

Tim Hortons, the Canadian coffee chain, is to open a new restaurant at Connswater Shopping Centre and Retail Park in Belfast.

The Connswater location will be the second Tim Hortons restaurant to open in Northern Ireland, and the first Drive-Thru. Its first site opened on Fountain Street in May.

In the UK, Tim Hortons restaurants serve Tim Hortons signature brewed coffee, espresso-based beverages, hot chocolate, French Vanilla and classic frozen Iced Capp drink, as well as baked goods, breakfast and lunch items.

Kevin Hydes, chief finance and commercial officer of the Tim Hortons franchise in the UK, said: “When we opened our first Belfast restaurant in May, we were completely blown away by the excitement and the we’ve been doing roaring trade ever since.

“Tim Hortons is in the process of an expansion strategy which will see us identifying a number of sites across Northern Ireland in the coming few years.”
