Exhibitor Spotlight: TEASPEC

10/10/2018

Pu'er is a tea like no-other. Made from the sun-dried raw materials of broad leaf species from Yunnan China, it is available as loose tea leaves or compressed into various shapes. In 2015, Carole Tan founded TEASPEC as a way of introducing tea enthusiasts to the world of Pu’er and other Chinese teas.

"From the start, we wanted not only to be advocates of these wondrous elixirs but also to educate neophytes on how to properly handle, brew and store the teas to get the most enjoyment out of it. We chose the name TEASPEC because we hold our teas to a higher quality and level of craftsmanship," she explain.

Here TEASPEC reveal what visitors to European Coffee Expo can discover about Pu'er and TEASPEC.

Tell us about the fine teas you'll be bringing to the show:

Opus Raw and Ripe, Ripe Marvel, Raw Dazzle, Jade Allure & Jasmine Envy.

Unlike other teas in the market, Pu’er tea is like fine wine and is distinguished by its vintage. Pu’er is unique to the world, the longer you store it, the more the taste will evolve and develop leading to a greater flavour profile over time.

Visitors to European Coffee Expo will be invited to try two versions of Pu’er; unfermented raw tea (Raw Dazzle) and fermented ripe tea (Ripe Marvel).

In addition to the loose leaf Pu’er tea, our Opus Pu’er tea bags offer the convenience without sacrificing the quality .

Our award winning Jasmine Envy is 100% plant based, naturally scented with jasmine flowers in green tea as a base.

The Jade Allure green tea has the delicate aroma of brown rice which gives the tea an interesting taste profile.

Please see the pdf file attached for the tasting note and product information.

What else can we expect from TEASPEC?

We will also be bringing the Lazy Go, a double-walled tumbler for brewing tea on the go. It comes with a protector and a silver foil-lined carrier with handle.

Lazy Go can fit into the drinks holder in the car.

There is a lot of interest in green teas and healthy beverages currently. How is TEASPEC responding to these opportunities, and also the challenges, in the tea sector?

The opportunities come from the growing awareness of the health benefits linked to drinking teas, which has seen an increase in tea drinking as a trend.

Our challenge is to educate the consumer of the benefits of Pu'er, not just as a refreshing beverage, but for wellness.

We are addressing this with in-store activities, social media campaigns and B2B/B2C events.

Please tell us more about Pu'er and its benefits:

The biggest benefit is its ability to lower cholesterol with regular consumption. During the early 1970s,  Pu’er tea entered France for the first time and was sold in pharmacies for its medicinal benefits as well as its ability in aiding weight loss.

Pu’er has abundant amounts of antioxidants and aids in weight loss. Like that apple a day which keeps the doctor away, a cup of Pu’er tea helps lower the big C - cholesterol while also aiding digestion.

Raw Pu’er was first consumed more than 2000 years ago. The general characteristics are its black and yellowgreen dry tea leaves, fresh floral aroma, rich aftertaste with golden or amber tea broth. It is appreciated especially by experts and collectors.

Ripe Pu’er on the other hand has a shorter history dating back to the 1970s. It features an accelerated fermentation technique with humidity and temperature to remove the astringency of the raw materials. The reddish brown tea leaves are compressed after fermentation. A strong brew with a woody aroma and mellow full flavour in dark brown tea broth, unlike raw Pu’er which requires storage to acquire its unique characteristics, ripe Pu’er is ready to drink
