Bullion craft chocolate links up with Caravan to launch Sheffield cafe
Bullion Craft Chocolate has raised more than £10,000 on Kickstarter Funding to launch its first bean-to-bar café alongside its craft chocolate factory in Kelham Island, Sheffield, in partnership with Caravan Restaurants, Bar & Coffee Roastery.
Founder Max Scotford, who launched Bullion in January 2017 (having been inspired by the ancient Maya Indians love of the cocoa bean) was “blown away” by the response to the Kickstarter fundraiser. “We are very much looking forward to welcoming you all to the new site later this year,” Scotford told followers on social media.
The chocolate production facility and café are located within a new food hall being built by Matt and Nina Bigland, owners of Cutlery Works, which claims to be the largest independent food hall in the North of England and will house a range of bars and pop-up restaurants, all located on the site of a former cutlery works.
“The idea for this café is to continue our vision for introducing people to a different side of chocolate. We craft chocolate that has such distinct flavour profiles, and these communicate beautifully through drinks and baked goods,” said Bullion.
Laura Harper-Hinton, co-founder and creative director of Caravan Restaurants, Bar & Coffee Roastery, said: “We are partnering with Bullion on its new factory/coffee shop in a food hall in Sheffield in the new Cutlery Works project in Kelham Island. Bullion is the only bean-to-bar chocolatier in Sheffield, opening a factory in the new development, with a coffee shop/hot chocolate bar frontage, with both blends and single origin coffee to pair with its single origin hot chocolates."
She continued: “Max is really good at what he does and doesn’t mess around. He and the team are brilliant at what they do, and we are super excited to be working with them. We can’t wait to see it come to life. It will be game changing!”
As part of its Kickstarter campaign, Bullion came up with a series of ‘pledge bundles’ as sweetners to get investors involved, this include: vouchers, a tour of the chocolate factory, a presentation box of chocolate bars, a branded trucker hat.
Working alongside cooperatives, Bullion said it is able to ensure that the growers are rewarded.
“I feel most people are barely scraping the surface when it comes to chocolate. The chocolate we’ve come to expect is so far from what it could be. For years the true flavours of cacao have been masked in order to create a product, which is a consistent sweet fix for the masses,” said Scotford.
